Revolutionary shoe to reduce pain for healthcare workers

Dr Joo Teoh, a Perth-based Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Surgeon has spent six years researching and designing a comfortable shoe suitable for hospital environments, to relieve pain for healthcare workers who work long shifts.

Dr Joo Teoh is among thousands of healthcare workers who work 12hour+ shifts, which can take a painful toll on foot health and result in ongoing injuries and discomfort. In fact, research shows 93% of work-related musculoskeletal disorders involving the back and legs are associated with long hours on workers’ feet – proper footwear design is critical in reducing these issues.

“For years, I listened to my colleagues complain about their uncomfortable or impractical footwear and sore feet,” Dr Teoh said.

We had to choose between shoes which were comfortable but weren’t easy to keep hygienic (like sneakers), or shoes that were easy to clean, but uncomfortable and ugly.

“I have a passion for finding solutions to problems – if there is a better way of doing something that will result in better outcomes for people, I want to help find it.

“When I couldn’t find footwear that supported healthcare workers to do their job safely and effectively, I knew I had to find a solution.”

Dr Teoh developed a detailed list of requirements and worked with international shoe designers and manufacturers to create the ultimate shoe for people who are on their feet for long periods of time.

SoulGuardz shoes are easy to slip on, durable, lightweight, flexible, waterproof and comfortable, making them ideal for hospital environments.

SoulGuardz shoes are not made with fabric which means they won’t trap germs like sneakers. They are made with a soft, crack-resistant flexible, rubber-based resin which is easy to clean

“Inside, the soles are made with scientifically designed and tested memory foam, which wraps the feet and ensures they offer premium comfort for extended periods of time.

“Rigorous testing was completed on the outside soles to ensure maximum grip and protection from slippage, and the vents have been designed to allow breathability but prevent fluid and spillage entering the shoe.”

As well as being available in black and black with red stripes, Dr Teoh engaged well-known Australian artist Wendy Binks to create unique illustrations for a limited-edition series, and plans to engage other local artists for future designs.
